Where Eagles Dare Theatre (picture by Ben Strothmann)

A year after I established the first Where Eagles Dare rehearsal space, another space became available on the ground floor of the same building. It was small and affordable -- and it had 14-foot ceilings!

Like the rehearsal space, the theatre is at 347 W. 36th St. (suite 104). This space is in the heart of Off-Off-Broadway's new Midtown theatre district, just a short walk from Penn Station or Times Square.

The design of this space is also a reaction to many years of renting inadequate and overpriced spaces in Manhattan. It has more dimmers and instruments (24) than most small spaces, as well as more-comfortable chairs -- 40 of them! -- mostly on risers. There are also a CD player, min-disc player, dual tape player, and sound board, with an amp and 2 large speakers. All in all, a fine place for a small show that has a small cast or no scenery. The floor is painted concrete.

Studio B has a piano, available for $3 / hr. There is also a $100 charge for tuning. This piano can be moved to the theatre for long-term engagements, availability permitting.

You can book the theatre by the week, the night, or the hour (for rehearsals only). There are two kinds of weekly bookings: exclusive and non-exclusive.

Weekly Rates

Exclusive booking

$1500

Non-exclusive booking (first week)

$1200

Non-exclusive booking (subsequent weeks)

$900

Exclusive bookings mean that you get a key to the theatre, and no one else may use it during your period of occupancy. Non-exclusive bookings mean that others may use the theatre during hours when you aren't using it. If you are the principal occupant (the "sitting show") during a non-exclusive booking, you get to determine the lighting plot, and no one else may change it. You may also store your things backstage, and other shows may not. In addition to four performances a week, you also get to use the theatre for a technical and a dress rehearsal at no extra charge. And of course, you get to load in, hang, and focus lights. Additional times are charged by the hour.
